Yunusa Tanko, national coordinator of the Obidient Movement, has released former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi’s 2014 handover report, which recorded a net balance of N86.67 billion in the state’s finances at the end of his tenure.
Tanko posted the document on X on Wednesday as the dispute between Obi and the Anambra State Government continues over loans, inherited debts and other financial obligations linked to previous administrations.
The report, dated March 17, 2014, was addressed to Obi’s successor, Willie Obiano. It summarised the state’s financial position as at the close of business on March 14, 2014, the final working day of Obi’s administration.
According to the document, local investments stood at N27 billion. Foreign currency investments of $156 million were valued at N26.5 billion. Certified balances for the state and its ministries, departments and agencies totalled N28.17 billion, while a Federal Government-approved refund of N10 billion was also listed. After deducting estimated liabilities, the report put the net balance at N86,665,985,574.06.
In the covering letter to Obiano, Obi stated: “As Friday 14 March, 2014 was the final working day of my Administration, I also forward herewith, the summary of the full financial statement of Anambra State (copies of which are herein attached) as at close of business on that day.”
Tanko challenged other governors who have led Anambra since 1999 to publish their own handover notes. “Let other governors, from 1999 till date, have the courage to publish their handover notes to their successors, as Peter Obi has done. Be accountable to the people,” he said.
The release comes as the Anambra State Government maintains that it is still servicing loans and other obligations inherited from previous administrations, including those from Obi’s time in office. Obi has rejected the claims, insisting his administration left no outstanding salaries, pensions or gratuities and that contractors for duly executed and certified projects were paid. He has challenged anyone to prove otherwise, saying he would stop campaigning if such evidence is produced. The state government has stood by its position on the inherited liabilities.
