The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, has condemned the escape of suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Anambra lawmaker, Hon. Justice Azuka, describing it as unacceptable.
The Anambra State Police Command had earlier confirmed the escape of two suspects linked to the kidnapping and killing of the lawmaker. However, in a statement on Wednesday, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, dismissed the police explanation as embarrassing, suspicious, and unacceptable.
“It is inconceivable that suspects of this caliber could escape from custody,” Okwu said, insisting that the police must provide a clear and credible explanation regarding the circumstances of their disappearance.
“This development reinforces fears that powerful individuals may be involved in the murder. How do kidnappers kill a victim after collecting a N100 million ransom? There is clearly more to this case than meets the eye.”
Okwu called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take over the investigation, demanding that the remaining suspects and case file be transferred to the IGP’s office.
“When this is done, the investigation should be expanded beyond kidnapping. The possibility of an assassination must also be considered, and no angle should be left unexplored. This is the only way to salvage the reputation of the police force and prevent further embarrassment,” he added.
The Ohanaeze youths also demanded the immediate arrest of all officers involved in the escape, insisting that holding them accountable was the only way to uncover the truth.
“The flimsy excuse offered by the Anambra police command cannot be accepted. The officers responsible must be arrested and investigated,” Okwu stated.
