The immediate past National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kola Ologbondiyan, has warned that the party could face an even worse crisis if it fails to zone the national chairmanship position to the North Central region.
Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels TV morning program on Thursday, Ologbondiyan cautioned party stakeholders against sidelining the North Central in the leadership structure, emphasizing that the region has already been allocated the position.
The PDP has been embroiled in internal conflicts since its 2022 national convention, which produced former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s 2023 presidential candidate. This decision led to discontent among some members, particularly a faction led by Nyesom Wike, which actively worked against the party during the election.
At present, the party is also divided over the national secretary position, with Sunday Ude-Okoye and Samuel Anyanwu locked in a legal dispute.
When asked about key issues the PDP must address to stabilize ahead of the 2027 elections, Ologbondiyan stressed that failing to officially assign the chairmanship position to the North Central could trigger another major crisis.
“We saw it coming, and anyone genuinely invested in the survival of the PDP cannot claim ignorance of this brewing issue”, he stated.
“I maintain, and I believe I speak for the majority in the North Central, that even if it’s just for a short period, the region must be allowed to assume the substantive national chairmanship.
“Senator Iyorchia Ayu vacated the office, and Ambassador Iliya Damagum is only in an acting capacity. That is not a substantive appointment.
“So, whether the current National Working Committee’s tenure ends in December or earlier, the North Central should be given the opportunity. Otherwise, the same sense of injustice that led to the G5 rebellion will persist. It may not take the same form, but history will record that the party was unjust to the North Central.
Meanwhile, in an attempt to resolve the ongoing crisis, the PDP’s Board of Trustees has directed the National Working Committee (NWC) to immediately swear in Sunday Ude-Okoye as the substantive national secretary, in compliance with a ruling from the Enugu High Court, which was upheld by the Court of Appeal.
