Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declined an offer to have a hall named after him at Shanahan College of Nursing Sciences, Nsukka, despite making a N20 million donation to the school’s ongoing infrastructural development.
During the donation ceremony, Reverend Father Kelvin Caesar, the institution’s manager, publicly announced that the hall’s construction was fully sponsored by Obi. As a token of appreciation, he proposed that the school name the facility after him.
However, Obi swiftly rejected the proposal, emphasizing that his philanthropic efforts are not for personal recognition.
Explaining his stance, Obi revealed that he has made similar donations to over 50 institutions across Nigeria and does not believe in self-glorification.
“I do it to serve humanity. The reason God blesses us with resources is to use them to improve the lives of others and not for self-glorification.”
Obi reaffirmed his commitment to education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation, stating that his goal is to secure a better future for Nigerian children.
Obi assured the institution that his support for their development would continue, promising to return for further contributions.
“I will return,” he assured.
