The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis is in stable condition and responding to treatment after being diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.
According to Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni, the Pope had a peaceful night at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he has been receiving care. He also ate breakfast on Wednesday morning and remains in good spirits, expressing gratitude for the prayers and well wishes from around the world.
Bruni, speaking to Fox News, reassured the public that Francis is resting well, stating:
“He had a tranquil night, woke up, and had breakfast.
Earlier reports from the Vatican revealed that Francis, who had a portion of his right lung removed in his youth, was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia following a chest X-ray and medical tests.
His condition has been described as complex, with the Vatican explaining:
“The polymicrobial infection, which developed on a background of bronchiectasis and asthmatiform bronchitis, required antibiotic cortisone therapy, making the treatment process more intricate.”
A chest CT scan performed on Tuesday confirmed the worsening of pneumonia, necessitating additional pharmacological treatment.
The 86-year-old Pontiff was admitted to the hospital on Friday after his bronchitis symptoms worsened. By Monday, doctors identified a polymicrobial respiratory infection, meaning that a mix of viruses, bacteria, and other organisms had affected his respiratory system.
Despite these challenges, the Pope continues to recover under close medical supervision, with Vatican officials closely monitoring his health.
