The presidency has fired back at former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following his recent criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Daniel Bwala, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, claimed that Obi is still struggling to move on from his 2023 election loss.
Bwala was reacting to Obi’s latest interview, where the former Anambra governor took a swipe at Tinubu’s leadership, blaming him for the country’s economic hardship.
In a post on X, Bwala accused Obi of lacking depth in his arguments and failing in his attempt to play the role of an opposition leader.
“As I listen to @PeterObi this evening struggling to play the opposition, I can’t help but shudder at his abysmal delivery,” Bwala wrote. “He spoke without facts, logical analysis, and almost sounded like a tinkling cymbal or a sounding brass.
“Mr. Gregory has still not recovered from the painful defeat of the 2023 polls. But I understand his confusion because, as it stands, he seems deserted in the banana republic of fantasy, wondering how to convince his followers about his agreement to play a second fiddle in the 2027 wild goose chase of the opposition. Nigeria dodged a bullet.”
Obi had earlier mocked Tinubu over Nigeria’s worsening economic situation, stating that the president is merely continuing the policies of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.
He cited the depreciation of the naira, pointing out that the exchange rate had surged from ₦400 to ₦1,500 per dollar under Tinubu’s watch.
According to Obi, a competent leader could reverse the nation’s economic woes.
“He (Tinubu) is doing well because he’s doing exactly what he promised—continuing from where the previous government stopped,” Obi said.
“Someone who met the dollar at 300 to 400 and now it is 1,500—he has done fantastic.
“When you talk about improvement, it’s not just words; it’s something people should feel and see.
“I hear people saying jobs are being created—where are the jobs? Investors are supposedly coming back—where are they investing?
“This situation can be turned around with a competent leader who has the capacity and compassion to serve. I would make sure to address Nigerians at least once every month.”
The exchange highlights the growing political tensions as both sides position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
