The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Hashimu Argungu, has formally requested the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate allegations of corruption, abuse of office, and extortion involving senior officers of the Zone 7 Police Command.
In a statement issued by PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani, Argungu urged the IGP to establish a competent committee to probe the Officer in Charge of the Legal Unit and the Deputy Commissioner of Operations at Zone 7 over alleged misconduct and violations of police ethics.
The request follows a petition from Alhaji Abubakar Yahaya, who accused the officers of illegally involving themselves in a civil dispute and providing cover for the demolition of his residential property, where he had lived for over 15 years.
According to the PSC chairman, on December 19, 2024, police officers and enforcement staff from the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, stormed Yahaya’s residence, evicted his family, and discarded his belongings.
Argungu further revealed that the enforcement unit, led by Shamsudeen Ubandoma, allegedly demanded and collected 700,000 naira from Yahaya under the pretext of paying the police officers to prevent further enforcement actions.
On January 16, 2025, police officers, court enforcement personnel, and an unidentified individual named Alhaji Usman Sarki arrived with bulldozers and demolished Yahaya’s home. The petitioner claims Sarki is a “faceless entity” known only through legal representatives and had no prior claim to the property, which he had occupied for over 15 years without any dispute.
Additionally, Yahaya alleged that after the demolition, the Officer in Charge of the Legal Unit at Zone 7 Police Command arrested him on charges of criminal conspiracy, trespass, and mischief, demanding 1 million naira for his bail.
Argungu condemned the actions of the officers, stating that the legal unit, which is meant to prosecute offenders, had instead become an instrument of oppression. He emphasized that the demolition was carried out solely under police supervision, without due process or adherence to natural justice.
The petitioner has demanded a full investigation into the officers’ conduct, appropriate disciplinary action, and compensation of 1 billion naira for damages.
The PSC chairman’s letter to the IGP underscores the commission’s commitment to ensuring police accountability and preventing officers from abusing their authority for personal or financial gain.
