Popular human rights activist and host of Brekete Family, Ahmed Isah, widely known as “Ordinary President” has criticized the Nigerian Senate following the heated clash between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan during Thursday’s plenary session.
The altercation began when Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, returned to the chamber and discovered that her assigned seat had been changed. Refusing to accept the new arrangement, she challenged the decision, leading to a tense exchange between her and Senate President Akpabio.
In a viral video, Natasha was seen confronting Akpabio, boldly declaring, “I am not afraid of you.”
Reacting to the incident on Friday during his Brekete Family radio and TV program, Ordinary President accused the Senate of undemocratic practices, claiming the legislative chamber operates like an autocracy rather than a democracy.
“Are we really practicing democracy? The National Assembly should be a model of democracy, but what we see especially from the Senate is autocracy,” he said.
He further praised members of the House of Representatives, describing them as wonderful human beings and expressed hope that their eventual transition to the Senate would bring positive change.
“The members of the House of Representatives are wonderful. I just hope that when they graduate to the Senate, Nigeria can move forward.”
Ordinary President also condemned the manner in which Senator Natasha was treated, suggesting that she was disrespected in the chamber.
“One man with a red cap was telling another man’s wife to keep quiet. Thank God she respected herself and sat down but later stood up again. He was literally dragging her down.
He questioned why women’s rights organizations had not spoken out against the incident.
“This happened yesterday, yet up till now, no reaction, nothing. Where are the women’s organizations?”
The confrontation between Akpabio and Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has sparked public debate, raising questions about gender dynamics, power struggles, and democratic values within Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber.
