Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin has sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s economic policies, particularly his decision to create the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the leadership of billionaire adviser Elon Musk.
Speaking after Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday, Slotkin accused the president and Musk of targeting Social Security and other essential benefits.
“Trump is orchestrating an unprecedented giveaway to his billionaire allies,” Slotkin said in her Democratic response to Trump’s speech. He’s looking for trillions of dollars to hand over to the wealthiest Americans, and the cost will come out of the pockets of everyday people.”
The Michigan senator warned that Trump’s policies could drive up the national debt and potentially lead the country into a recession.
“If he’s not careful, he could walk us straight into an economic crisis,” she cautioned. “And to fund his agenda, he might come after your hard-earned retirement benefits, Social Security, Medicare, and VA benefits.”
Slotkin also pointed to Musk’s controversial stance on social programs, noting, “The president claims he won’t touch Social Security, but Elon Musk just called it “the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time”.
Her remarks come just hours after Trump imposed steep tariffs, including a 25% levy on major U.S. trading partners Canada and Mexico, while also doubling existing tariffs in key sectors.
