Panic has gripped Umunede and Mbiri communities in Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State following the killing of two farmers by suspected herdsmen on Tuesday.
The incident, which occurred along Idumu-Ikeze Quarters and Mbiri farm settlement road, triggered a violent reprisal as angry youths stormed a Hausa settlement in Umunede, setting camps and motorcycles ablaze late Tuesday night.
A local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, recounted the harrowing incident, stating that the herdsmen had been terrorizing the area for years.
“One of the victims was on his way to check his cassava plantation when he encountered the suspected herdsmen. They killed him and another farm laborer working in the settlement.
“People are now afraid to go to their farms. For over two years, we have been living in fear, and hardly a week goes by without reports of a farmer being killed by these men in Ika land”, the source lamented.
In retaliation, youths from Mbiri reportedly pursued the herdsmen to their settlement in Umunede, where they set fire to properties, including four motorcycles.
Confirming the attack, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, stated that two persons were killed, though the perpetrators remain unidentified.
“Yes, two persons were killed. Nobody knows who shot them, but the community claimed it was the Hausa people and retaliated.
“As I speak, calm has been restored in the two communities”, he assured.
Despite the police intervention, tension remains high, with residents fearing further attacks as the conflict between farmers and herders continues to escalate in the region.
