President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s dedication to supporting Nigeria’s polytechnic education sector to drive productivity, industrial growth, and sustainable economic development.
Speaking at the 22nd convocation ceremony of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, on Wednesday, Tinubu, represented by Dr. Ejeh Usman, Senior Director of Polytechnics and Allied Institutions highlighted plans to revamp Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). He revealed that the curriculum would be restructured to focus 80% on practical training and 20% on theory, ensuring students acquire hands-on skills needed in industries like renewable energy and agriculture.
The President emphasized that education remains a priority for his administration, ranking third in the 2024 budget after defense and infrastructure. He noted that under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the government aims to transform the TVET sector, positioning polytechnics as key drivers of national development, job creation, and economic sustainability.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by Commissioner for Education Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, urged graduates to maximize their skills, regardless of their career paths. He assured them that his administration remains committed to investing in education, infrastructure, and industrial development.
Delivering the convocation lecture, themed “A Renewed Hope Agenda”:Brain Drain and Japa Syndrome The Way Forward, Inspector General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun, represented by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, addressed the increasing migration of skilled Nigerians due to inadequate healthcare, poor education infrastructure, and economic instability. He called on the government to improve working conditions and invest in skill development to create viable local opportunities for professionals.
Earlier, the institution’s Rector, Dr. Mukail Akinde, advised graduates to work hard, avoid crime, and support national development. He commended President Tinubu’s interventions in education, particularly the introduction of student loans, which he said had contributed significantly to progress in the polytechnic sub-sector.
