Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has taken a swipe at Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, accusing him of exaggerating his political strength and relying heavily on influential backing to secure victory in the 2023 governorship election.
In a statement released on Tuesday by his media aide, George Maduka, the senator representing Abia North said Governor Otti did not win the election solely on personal political influence, but with the support of key stakeholders across the state.
Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the All Progressives Congress takes control of the state in the 2027 general elections.
The comments followed Otti’s declaration on Monday that he would back the Labour Party candidate in Abia North to defeat Kalu in the next senatorial election. Otti made the statement while responding to Kalu’s earlier vow to deliver Abia State to the APC in 2027.
Reacting, Kalu described the APC as united and strong in Abia, insisting that the party is free from internal divisions. He alleged that the Labour Party under Otti’s leadership is the one battling internal crises.
According to the senator, several local government chairmen elected on the platform of the Labour Party are no longer active within the party and are now operating under other political platforms, including the Zenith Labour Party and the Young Progressives Party.
Kalu also challenged Otti to deny visiting his residence in Igbere late at night on the eve of the 2023 election. He recalled that prominent figures involved in the Labour Party’s campaign, including a senior advocate of Nigeria who served as the party’s state coordinator, held discussions with him ahead of the polls.
He argued that such engagements contradict Otti’s claims of political independence and relevance.
The senator further challenged the governor to address him directly rather than issuing statements through media aides. He concluded by restating his determination to deliver electoral victories for the APC at all levels in Abia State ahead of 2027.
