Suspected kidnappers have abducted the Onogie of Udo-Eguare, a traditional ruler in Igueben Local Government Area, Edo Central, along with several others whose exact number remains unknown.
The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, revealing that the monarch was attacked while traveling on a motorcycle, and his rider—commonly referred to as an Okada rider—was shot dead during the ambush.
According to the police statement:
“The command has received a report of the unfortunate kidnapping of some persons, including the Onogie of Udo-Eguare, a 21-year-old man, late on Sunday night.
He was riding as a passenger on a motorcycle along a lonely path leading to his community when they were ambushed by unknown gunmen. In the process, the Okada rider was shot dead, and the Onogie was taken away.”
In response to the attack, Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Betty Otimenyin, has ordered the immediate deployment of police tactical units, including the Police Mobile Force, to the area.
“The Area Commander is personally on the ground leading the rescue operation, as directed by the Commissioner of Police,” the statement added.
Security forces have launched a manhunt for the kidnappers, while efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe return of the abducted victims.
