A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and member of its Board of Trustees, Chief Bode George, has revealed why he parted ways with Nyesom Wike, despite initially aligning with him to challenge Atiku Abubakar during the 2023 presidential election
Speaking on Arise TV on Friday, George accused former PDP National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu and Atiku of disrupting the party’s zoning arrangement, which, he claimed, was the root of the PDP’s internal crisis.
George explained that the trouble began when both the party’s presidential ticket and national chairmanship were zoned to the North, violating PDP’s traditional power-sharing formula.
“The presidential candidate went to the northern zone, and the chairman of the party also went to the same zone. We said no, it can’t happen like this. That was the basis of the party’s crisis. I didn’t just jump ship to be with Wike or Atiku; I had meetings with both of them and Ayu. They disrupted the system,” he said.
He stated that before siding with Wike’s faction, he made efforts to convince Atiku and Ayu to reconsider their stance, but they refused to listen.
George admitted that he supported Wike’s faction out of frustration with Atiku and Ayu’s handling of the party but later distanced himself when he realized Wike’s camp was planning to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Tinubu.
“When Wike’s group came, we had a meeting, and they made me a leader. But in the end, they said they believed Bola (Tinubu) was the better option among the southern candidates. I told them that if they stepped out of that meeting and said this in public, I would counter them.”
“You guys have no idea who this gentleman (Tinubu) is. He ruled my state (Lagos), and we know his modus operandi,” he added.
George’s remarks highlight the deep divisions within the PDP that shaped the outcome of the 2023 election and continue to affect the party’s future.
