Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has rejected claims that he influenced a Federal High Court judgment nullifying Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma’s nomination as the All Progressives Congress candidate for Imo West senatorial district in the 2027 election.
Speaking during a media chat on Thursday, Wike said anyone linking him to the decision was being mischievous. “Anybody calling my name is being mischievous. I didn’t go to court; I’m not in APC. I don’t know what the issues are,” he stated.
The judgment, delivered on October 29 by Justice Obiora Egwuatu, directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to replace Uzodimma with former Imo governor Rochas Okorocha. It also ordered Uzodimma to stop presenting himself as the APC candidate for the election scheduled for January 16, 2027.
Wike linked the speculation about his involvement to comments Uzodimma made a day before the ruling. He said the governor had warned supporters against any Rainbow Coalition and threatened to seize vehicles from those who associated with it, describing the remarks as uncivilised. When the judgment followed, some attributed it to him, Wike noted, asking what Uzodimma feared about the Rainbow Coalition.
The minister said he made no apologies for his friendship with Okorocha. He stressed that President Bola Tinubu’s re-election remained his priority and urged Uzodimma to adopt the same focus. Wike added that he could not support the governor’s senatorial bid because it was not the turn of his people in the state, and that land disputes existed between their families.
