Lere Olayinka, the spokesman for the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has rejected Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri’s recent security alert, describing it as “shamefully baseless” and a mere cover-up for his failures in governance.
Olayinka, who serves as Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, criticized Diri for what he termed unnecessary alarm over a planned mega rally in support of Wike. He argued that if Wike intended to attend any rally, he would have personally informed security agencies, making the governor’s concerns unwarranted.
Reacting to Diri’s claims that a political group loyal to Wike was planning a rally in Bayelsa, Olayinka dismissed the allegations, questioning why a governor with access to security resources would publicly raise an alarm based on mere suspicion.
“It is unfortunate that a governor would go on national television over the mere suspicion of people planning a rally, which is their constitutional right,” Olayinka stated. “Is this how afraid Governor Diri is of Wike? Can he stop people from expressing their political support?”
He further asserted that if Wike were to attend any political event in Bayelsa, his presence would be clear, and he would follow proper security procedures. Olayinka criticized the governor for convening a Security Council and Bayelsa Elders Council meeting over what he described as an insignificant issue.
“Is this how governance in Bayelsa has been reduced to? Must Wike always be the scapegoat for his failures?” he questioned.
Olayinka also alleged that Governor Diri had once sought Wike’s support for his re-election but was now attacking him for political gain.
“When he needed re-election, he was brought to Wike in the dead of night, begging for support,” Olayinka claimed. “Now, the same Wike has become his target. It’s shameful how quickly some people forget.”
He concluded by accusing the Bayelsa governor of lacking political integrity and using Wike’s name to distract from his administration’s shortcomings.
