At least thirteen people, including women and children, have been killed in a fresh attack by suspected herdsmen in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
The assailants reportedly launched coordinated attacks on multiple communities, including Utange council ward, Kpav, Dikpo, and Imande Gberihwa, on Saturday night. Several residents have been declared missing, while many others fled to neighboring communities for safety.
A local source, speaking anonymously, revealed that the violence began on Friday when armed herders invaded Utange and killed several people. The attackers then struck again on Saturday night, targeting Kpav, particularly Dikpo and Imande Gberihwa, leaving more casualties in their wake.
Confirming the attack, the Chairman of Katsina-Ala LGA, Justine Shaku, stated that 13 people were killed, seven others sustained injuries, and several houses were set ablaze. “There was no provocation, yet these killings have continued over time,” he lamented.
In reaction to the tragedy, Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the affected families. “This level of brutality is deeply troubling and will not be tolerated,” the governor stated in a press release issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Tersoo Kula.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, CSP Catherine Anene, for confirmation of the incident were unsuccessful.
