The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called on President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government to initiate dialogue with non-violent pro-Biafra leaders, describing it as a historic opportunity to resolve the long-standing Biafra issue.
In a statement released on Tuesday by its factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and National Spokesperson, Chief Thompson Ohia, Ohanaeze said the present moment represents the first real chance in 55 years to bring lasting resolution to a conflict that has persisted since the end of the Nigeria-Biafra civil war.
The organization warned that the Federal Government’s continued reluctance to engage these peaceful agitators is a strategic misstep that could lead to dire consequences for both the Southeast and the country as a whole.
“The failure to initiate meaningful dialogue reflects a missed opportunity to heal wounds that have remained open for over half a century,” the statement read.
Ohanaeze emphasized that these pro-Biafra groups, known for their peaceful approach, have not been banned or proscribed, nor have they been associated with violence or confrontation against government institutions.
“For over two decades, they have been the moral conscience of the Southeast, speaking out against systemic injustices and the harsh socio-economic realities plaguing the region,” the group stated.
According to Ohanaeze, only through genuine and inclusive dialogue with these nonviolent leaders can the government dismantle the cycles of insecurity and unrest in the Southeast.
“History shows that sustainable peace comes through dialogue, not suppression — a lesson repeatedly overlooked by successive military and civilian administrations.”
With the 2027 general elections approaching, Ohanaeze warned that visible signs of unrest and dissatisfaction could grow more intense if the core issues remain unaddressed. They stressed that the elections would serve as a referendum on the country’s deepening hunger and poverty.
The group cautioned President Tinubu against relying on political endorsements and defections from Southeast governors, describing such moves as “ephemeral” and driven by self-interest rather than genuine support.
“The experience of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 serves as a cautionary tale — misplaced political trust can carry grave consequences.”
Ohanaeze further warned of growing political marginalization in the Southeast, noting that opposition coalitions are actively exploiting the region’s frustrations to weaken the current administration.
“The influence of Southeast governors has significantly declined. Today, the voice with the most resonance belongs to the nonviolent pro-Biafra agitators, who have the grassroots capacity to mobilize across all 774 local government areas.”
They described the olive branch extended by these peaceful leaders as a “historic handshake of reconciliation,” urging the government not to squander this chance.
“Seizing this moment could mark the beginning of a new era — one grounded in dialogue, unity, and national healing. The time to act is now.”
