Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, has urged former Vice President and PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to step aside from the 2027 race and support a younger contender.
Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television Thursday night, Baba-Ahmed advised Atiku to assume a statesmanlike role and back a fresh face to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“If I had the chance to speak with Atiku, I would say, ‘Sir, you’ve done your bit. You’ve upheld democracy and made your mark. It’s time to hand over to a younger, more capable figure,’” Baba-Ahmed said.
He argued that a dynamic and relatively untainted young candidate, with fewer political and personal liabilities, would pose a formidable challenge to the ruling party.
“Such a candidate would take the APC to the cleaners,” he added.
Baba-Ahmed also criticized the APC’s growing ranks, describing it as a magnet for opportunists and those fleeing prosecution.
“APC is growing with the wrong people. Many of those defecting are either chasing appointments or trying to evade the EFCC,” he stated.
“It’s becoming a refugee camp that is bound to explode.”
The comments come amid increasing political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 elections, with concerns mounting over recycling of aged candidates and integrity within party ranks.
