Twenty-four members of the Ondo State House of Assembly have insisted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership cannot force embattled Speaker Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji to remain in office.
The lawmakers, who rose from a parliamentary meeting in Akure, said Oladiji must either resign or face impeachment over allegations of financial misconduct involving about ₦44 million tied to the reordering of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) budget.
They also set up a four-member panel to examine the Assembly’s finances.
Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Olatunji Fabiyi, dismissed reports that the lawmakers had abandoned the impeachment process after a peace window closed on Sunday. He confirmed that party leaders had intervened in the crisis.
“We are still waiting for the leadership of the party. We cannot proceed further until the party gives us direction, so the matter is pending,” Fabiyi told journalists. “We are still on course.”
He noted that while the executive does not interfere in legislative matters, it is appropriate for the ruling party to mediate because all 26 lawmakers belong to the APC.
“APC has total control of the House. Our father should call all his sons together to resolve the issue,” he said. “It is not possible [to impose Oladiji]. Our father will not prefer one person at the expense of the 24 members that have lost confidence in his leadership.”
Fabiyi also rejected claims that members were induced by the state government, describing the reports as false. “No lawmaker received any bribe to influence the meeting or alter its outcome. We have not abandoned our position on the leadership crisis.”
The meeting, he explained, was convened so lawmakers could resume their constitutional duties of lawmaking and oversight after a prolonged absence of plenary and committee activities. Members discussed constituency projects, flooding in riverine areas, and other developmental challenges across the state’s 18 local government areas.
The House passed resolutions urging relevant government agencies to address the recurring floods and directed all standing committees to resume regular sittings. It adjourned to reconvene in about two weeks, with another parliamentary meeting scheduled as consultations continue.
