The Simon Ekpa-led United States of Biafra (USB) has condemned the killing of over 20 villagers in Nkalaha community, Ebonyi State, vowing to embrace self-defence in response to the attack.
The incident has drawn widespread outrage, with the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council criticizing Governor Francis Nwifuru for allegedly failing to protect the people. The group also expressed anger that, while residents blamed herdsmen for the attack, the governor merely referred to the assailants as “strangers”.
Reacting on Wednesday, Dr. Ngozi Orabueze, who identifies as the Deputy Prime Minister of Biafra, stated that her group had approved measures to legalize self-defence and local arms manufacturing as a means of protection.
“During the just-concluded 12th session of the USB Cabinet meeting, the following bills were proposed by the Deputy Prime Minister on behalf of the Prime Minister, voted for, and passed into law by the Cabinet members:
The right to bear arms and self-defence.
Self-defence is necessary for the security of liberty and a free state.
The right of the people to keep and bear arms for the purpose of defending themselves and the state shall not be infringed.
The United States of Biafra, as a state, is tasked with obtaining the means to locally manufacture defensive weapons to be used to defend the state and its people.
It remains unclear how Orabueze and her group plan to implement such measures, given that Nigerian law strictly prohibits non-state actors from bearing arms or manufacturing weapons.
Meanwhile, a report from the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) last week revealed that between December 2024 and January 2025, security forces and non-state actors were responsible for the deaths of 180 people in the South-East.
Despite the alarming figures, Nigerian security agencies have yet to respond to Intersociety’s findings.
