The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Wednesday as the rival factions led by former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike issued competing disclaimers, each declaring the other camp expelled from the party.
In what has now become a tit-for-tat purge, both factions released official notices listing prominent politicians they insist are no longer PDP members. The parallel announcements underscore the growing fragmentation of the party as two leadership blocs continue to assert dominance.
Turaki Faction Releases Expulsion Notice
The Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) published a disclaimer containing photographs and names of 11 high-profile politicians allegedly expelled during the Ibadan elective convention held between November 15 and 16. The individuals listed include:
- Nyesom Wike
- Samuel Anyanwu
- Ayodele Fayose
- Umar Bature
- Kamaldeen Ajibade
- Mao Ohuabunwa
- George Turnah
- Dan Orbih
- Austine Nwachukwu
- Moh’d Abdulrahman
- Abraham Amah
The notice, signed by Kabiru Turaki as national chairman, warned that any engagements with those on the list are unauthorized and “at the peril” of anyone who grants them legitimacy.
This announcement came only days after the same politicians were issued expulsion certificates in Abuja shortly after Umar Damagum formally handed over leadership to Turaki.
Defending the action, Turaki said the expulsions were necessary to restore discipline and reposition the party.
“These actions were necessary to cleanse our ranks of elements who have consistently worked against the PDP’s interests,” he said.
“Anyone who has held parallel congresses, sponsored litigations, or openly campaigned for rival parties has no business in our fold.”
He stressed that the PDP must now rebuild its structures and unity ahead of the next general election.
“The PDP will never die. This party is bigger than any individual or group,” he added.
Wike Camp Fires Back With Counter-Disclaimer
Moments later, the Wike-aligned faction countered with its own disclaimer, declaring that 18 politicians, including Turaki himself, had already been expelled by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on November 18.
The notice, signed by National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, included the following names:
- Bala Mohammed
- Dauda Lawal
- Seyi Makinde
- Emmanuel Udom
- Adolphus Wabara
- Taofeek Arapaja
- Kabiru Tanimu Turaki
- Ben Obi
- Bode George
- Okechukwu Obiechina
- Emmanuel Ogidi
- Emmanuel Eledan
- Suleiman Kadade Mohammed
- Sumaila Adamu Bunza
- Kosheodo Sotonji
- Daniel Woyengikuro
- Umar Sani
- Umar Bargo
The faction accused them of “falsely parading themselves” as PDP officers and warned the public to ignore any statements, activities, or claims from the affected individuals.
The group also dismissed the Ibadan convention, where Turaki’s leadership emerged, as illegitimate.
“The purported convention was a charade and a social gathering with no constitutional backing,” the statement declared.
Deepening Fractures Within PDP
The duelling disclaimers mark the latest escalation in a worsening leadership struggle that has produced two competing national structures and conflicting chains of authority. Analysts warn that the back-and-forth expulsions risk pushing the party toward a full-blown split if mediation efforts fail.
With both sides now insisting that the other faction no longer exists within the PDP, the battle for control appears far from over, raising fresh questions about the party’s stability as it prepares for upcoming election cycles.
