A Polaris Bank branch manager was shot dead and two female students abducted on the campus of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) on Sunday evening when suspected kidnappers opened fire.
The banker, identified only as Mr. Ossy and based in Owerri, was dropping off his children at the university when the gunmen struck. His children escaped unharmed, but he was fatally shot after reportedly resisting the attackers.
Polaris Bank confirmed the killing in a statement by its Head of Brand Management and Corporate Communication, Rasheed Bolarinwa. The bank said the manager was attacked by hoodlums while bringing his children to the campus and that the children managed to flee while their father did not.
FUTO management also confirmed the incident. In a statement signed by Registrar Chinonso Uba, the university said a visitor was shot dead on September 6 and two female students were taken by the attackers. Management said it is working closely with security agencies to secure the students’ safe release and promised to strengthen security on campus and in neighbouring communities.
The attack triggered an emergency response. On Monday, FUTO management met with Imo State Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso, who pledged to intensify security around the university and surrounding areas including Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, Obinze and Nekede.
A planned student protest over the killing was called off after university authorities reaffirmed a ban on rowdy post-examination gatherings. The restriction, first adopted by the FUTO Senate in 2023 and 2024, prohibits disorderly assemblies, road blockades, littering and destruction of university property.
No arrests had been announced as of the latest reports, leaving pressure on security agencies to track down the perpetrators and free the two abducted students.
