Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has secured the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election, defeating former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in the party’s primary.
Atiku polled 1,846,379 votes to beat Amaechi, who garnered 540,117 votes, while Hayatu-Deen finished third with 177,120 votes. The result was announced by returning officer Tunde Ogbeha, after which ADC National Chairman David Mark presented the party flag to Atiku as its standard bearer for the 2027 presidential election.
The development sets the stage for another fierce three-way contest similar to the 2023 election, with Atiku expected to face incumbent President Bola Tinubu of the APC and Peter Obi, now representing the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
In his acceptance speech, Atiku described the ADC as a platform where democracy remains alive, accusing the ruling APC government of suppressing opposition voices and engineering crises within opposition parties. He alleged that institutions such as INEC and elements within the judiciary were being used to weaken opposition politics.
The former vice president also condemned the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, claiming he was being targeted for his opposition role despite court orders granting him bail.
Atiku promised that an ADC-led government would tackle insecurity, revive the economy, improve healthcare and education, and strengthen democratic institutions. He criticised the current administration over rising poverty, insecurity, unemployment, and borrowing, while pledging free and compulsory primary and secondary education, improved healthcare infrastructure, and reforms aimed at attracting investment and creating jobs.
He further accused the APC government of promoting political intimidation and attempting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, warning against interference in ADC affairs by the presidency, INEC, or the judiciary.
Calling for unity within the coalition, Atiku urged Amaechi, Hayatu-Deen, and other aggrieved party members to join forces ahead of the 2027 election, insisting that “there are no winners and no losers” within the party.
