The leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) took a fresh turn on Wednesday as the Federal High Court in Abuja fixed June 8 for the hearing of a suit challenging the emergence of the party’s interim leadership headed by former Senate President David Mark.
Justice Peter Lifu adjourned the matter after counsel to the plaintiff, Robert Emukpoeruo (SAN), requested additional time due to the absence of lawyers representing parties seeking to join the case.
The suit was filed by Nafiu-Bala Gombe, a former Deputy National Chairman of the ADC, who is contesting the legality of the party’s current leadership arrangement. Gombe is seeking an order restraining David Mark, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, and members of the party’s interim National Working Committee from acting as leaders of the ADC, arguing that their emergence violated the party’s constitution and provisions of the Electoral Act.
During proceedings, only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and parties seeking joinder were absent. While the court confirmed that INEC had been served with hearing notices, those seeking to join the suit had not yet been served.
The judge ordered the court bailiff to serve all pending hearing notices within 24 hours and directed all parties to file and exchange their legal processes before the next hearing date.
The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025, comes amid growing divisions within the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections, with rival factions backing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and businessman, politician Dumebi Kachikwu as presidential candidates.
