In a pointed rebuttal delivered from Russia’s annual economic forum in St Petersburg, President Vladimir Putin has dismissed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s latest push for face-to-face negotiations to end the war.
Zelensky’s open letter, sent just a day earlier, urged direct dialogue and a ceasefire, arguing it was “wrong to simply wait” for the conflict to regain international attention. Putin, however, saw little value in the overture, labeling the tone “rude” and insisting that any meeting must follow substantive agreements rather than precede them.
The Russian leader made his position crystal clear: a ceasefire without addressing Moscow’s core demands would only give Ukraine time to regroup. “The only point is for the Ukrainian side to halt the advance of our armed forces,” Putin said. “But we need agreements—not for six months, not for three months, but for the long term.” He suggested experts should first hammer out solutions before any summit, underscoring Russia’s longstanding preconditions: Ukrainian withdrawal from Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions, plus abandoning NATO aspirations.
Zelensky’s letter had struck a defiant and occasionally mocking note, referencing Putin’s long tenure and recent Ukrainian strikes deep into Russian territory, including one near St Petersburg. Putin didn’t let that slide, calling out the “rude remarks.”
In response, Zelensky posted on Telegram that Russia “was choosing war again,” expressing disappointment shared by many watching from afar. The exchange highlights the deep impasse more than four years into the full-scale invasion that began in 2022.
US President Donald Trump had welcomed the possibility of a meeting, saying “it would be great” if the two leaders sat down. Yet Putin’s firm stance suggests little immediate momentum toward peace.
Russia maintains it will continue operations until its goals are fully met, while Ukraine refuses any territorial concessions, fearing they would only invite future aggression especially given the 2014 annexation of Crimea.
The diplomatic frost comes amid fresh battlefield developments. Ukraine reported striking five cargo ships in the Sea of Azov accused of transporting stolen grain and military supplies. A Ukrainian drone also veered into Romanian territory after alleged Russian electronic interference, while Russian attacks across Ukraine claimed at least 13 lives in the past day, including strikes on a dairy factory near Kyiv and a petrol station in Kherson.
As the war grinds on with no end in sight, this latest exchange between Putin and Zelensky reinforces the profound trust deficit between the two sides. For now, the path to talks remains blocked, leaving the people of Ukraine and the broader international community wondering when, or if, the guns might finally fall silent. The ISS may have weathered its recent leak, but the fractures in this geopolitical standoff run far deeper.
