The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday strongly condemned the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, describing the incident as a heartbreaking national tragedy.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while addressing senators at the resumption of plenary, said the abduction represents a direct assault on the nation’s collective humanity.
“We resume our work under the mournful shadow of a tragedy that has shaken our nation. The abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State is not merely an attack on innocent citizens; it is an assault on our collective humanity,” Akpabio stated.
He expressed deep concern over the country’s persistent failure to guarantee the safety of children and educators, warning that ongoing insecurity threatens Nigeria’s future and the stability of its educational system.
Paying tribute to the victims, Akpabio remembered Michael Oyedokun, who died in captivity, Adesiyan Adegboye, who was killed during the attack, and a young child who also lost his life.
“Their loss is our loss. Their sorrow is our sorrow. Their pain is our pain,” he declared.
The Senate President expressed optimism that security agencies and government authorities would secure the swift release of those still in captivity. He subsequently led lawmakers in a minute of silence in honour of the deceased.
In response to the rising wave of insecurity, Akpabio directed Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele to schedule a date for a proposed national summit aimed at tackling the country’s worsening security challenges.
The Senate’s reaction follows the May 15 abduction of 39 pupils and seven teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The incident triggered public outrage, protests, and an indefinite strike by teachers in the state.
Meanwhile, Akpabio also addressed political anxieties within the chamber, reassuring senators who lost their party nominations during the recent primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections. He assured them that the Senate leadership is actively working to address concerns arising from the primaries’ outcome.
