A broad coalition of civil society organisations, trade unions, youth groups, and other stakeholders has fixed June 12, 2026 – Nigeria’s Democracy Day, for a nationwide protest and mass action against rising insecurity and worsening economic conditions.
In a joint statement, the groups expressed deep frustration over persistent terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes that continue to claim lives, displace communities, and disrupt daily life across the country. They also highlighted unbearable economic pressures, including soaring inflation, fuel price hikes, currency devaluation, increased electricity tariffs, and the escalating cost of food and transportation.
Prominent human rights lawyer and National Chairman of the Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB), Femi Falana, led the signatories. Other notable figures include Hassan Taiwo Soweto of the #EndBadGovernance Movement, Yinka Folarin of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, musician and activist Falz, and representatives from various socialist, labour, and youth organisations.
The coalition lamented that many Nigerians have little to celebrate on Democracy Day as innocent citizens continue to be killed, abducted, or traumatised, while government efforts to tackle the security crisis remain inadequate.
“Schools remain under threat, farmers cannot access their farmlands, and major highways are still unsafe,” the statement noted. It demanded the immediate release of all persons currently held captive in states such as Oyo, Borno, Katsina, Kwara, Ekiti, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Niger.
On the economic front, the groups decried the erosion of living standards, insufficient wages amid persistent inflation, and the struggles of small businesses due to high operating costs and unstable power supply.
The planned protest is intended to pressure the government to prioritise the protection of lives and property and implement urgent measures to alleviate the suffering of ordinary citizens.
The coalition called on workers, students, traders, market women, professionals, unemployed youths, religious bodies, and trade unions to mobilise massively in their communities, workplaces, and campuses for the demonstration.
“The time has come for Nigerians to speak with one voice and demand security, dignity, and a decent standard of living. Enough of the killings. Enough of the kidnappings. Enough of the hunger. Enough of the suffering,” the statement declared.
