The Senate has called on state governments nationwide to immediately halt all negotiations and peace accords with terrorists and armed bandits, citing their ineffectiveness and risk of inadvertently funding further criminal activities.
In a strong resolution, the upper chamber also directed the Nigeria Police Force and the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre to identify and apprehend bandits who brazenly use social media platforms, particularly TikTok, to flaunt large sums of money believed to be proceeds of crime while engaging the public.
The resolutions stemmed from a motion sponsored by Senator Sunday Karimi (Kogi West), who expressed deep concern over the resurgence of terrorist attacks in his senatorial district.
Senator Karimi highlighted a recent assault on Iluke-Bunu in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, where terrorists invaded a secondary school during the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), killing the vice principal, a teacher, and another community member while attempting to abduct students. The incident occurred just a day after bandits attacked a private residence in Odo-Ere, Yagba West Local Government Area, on June 8, 2026.
Lawmakers further resolved to invite the Commander of the National Centre for Control of Arms and Small Weapons (NCSALW) to brief the Senate on the incidents and the broader challenges of arms proliferation across the country.
