Farouk Aliyu, a prominent chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has dismissed suggestions by some party members that Nigeria’s worsening security situation is being orchestrated by the opposition, insisting instead that criminal elements are to blame.
Aliyu urged the government to confront the crisis directly rather than engaging in partisan blame games. He stressed that insecurity should not be politicised, describing it as a national calamity affecting all citizens irrespective of political or ethnic lines.
“I do not subscribe to those members of APC that think that this is work of opposition. It’s totally untrue. It’s not the work of the opposition. I don’t believe so,” Aliyu said.
He attributed the violence primarily to “criminals and soldiers, and immigrants,” while acknowledging that security agencies are actively engaged in operations against insurgency and banditry across the country. However, he cautioned that responses must be measured to avoid unnecessary collateral damage to innocent civilians.
“The government cannot just go… go after them. The government is trying as much as possible to make sure that nobody’s injured or killed in the process,” he explained.
Aliyu called for unity across political divides, stating that both the government and opposition, along with ordinary Nigerians, must work together to tackle the crisis. “This thing [insecurity] as a national calamity. It’s not about the ruling party or the opposition party. It’s collective. All of us are in this thing together,” he added.
On the economic front, Aliyu admitted that Nigerians are grappling with significant challenges, particularly the high cost of living, but noted that such difficulties are not unique to Nigeria amid global economic pressures. He defended ongoing reforms, including the clean-up of the national register, saying it is necessary to eliminate duplications and ensure the effective rollout of the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
“They are trying to clean the register in the country, to ensure that there are no duplications… And I am sure, at any moment from now, these things will be put in place,” Aliyu said, urging patience as the process is finalised.
He also offered a pragmatic view on governance, noting that some promises made while in opposition often prove difficult to fulfil once in power due to prevailing realities and decisions taken by previous administrations.
“By the time you get into the office… you know that certain promises you make cannot be fulfilled. So that’s it,” he remarked.
Aliyu concluded that Nigerians will have the opportunity to assess the government’s performance at the polls, but appealed for collective support in addressing the nation’s security and economic challenges in the meantime.
