Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have recorded another significant victory in the fight against drug trafficking, intercepting a massive 4,959-kilogram consignment of Canadian Loud cannabis valued at N12.397 billion at the Apapa Port in Lagos.
The seizure, made on Wednesday, June 23, followed over four weeks of intensive intelligence surveillance. The 40-foot container, which also carried a Ford and a Nissan vehicle, originated from Toronto, Canada, on April 25. It transited through Montreal by truck and rail, passed through Morocco’s Tanger Med Port, and arrived at Tin Can Port, Lagos, before being moved to Apapa for the joint examination involving NDLEA, Nigeria Customs Service, and other agencies.
In a related operation at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, NDLEA officers arrested 38-year-old businesswoman Iwebema Ogechi Peace as she attempted to board a Qatar Airways flight to Beijing, China. Officers recovered 7.5 kilograms of cocaine cleverly concealed in a false bottom of her suitcase.
Peace, who claimed to be a regular traveller to China for legitimate business, was apprehended at Terminal 2 based on credible intelligence.
The agency also dismantled a drug syndicate specialising in planting illicit substances in the luggage of unsuspecting passengers at motor parks. The breakthrough began on June 20 when operatives intercepted a Sienna bus from Nnewi at Abaji in the Federal Capital Territory, recovering 467.7 grams of methamphetamine.
Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of the intended recipient, Mrs. Gloria Peter, at Utako Motor Park, bus loaders in Nnewi, driver Abdurrazak Isah, and the consignment owner, Onyebuchi Victor Okoye, in Abuja. One loader confessed to inserting the drugs on the driver’s instruction.
Elsewhere, NDLEA’s Special Operations Unit arrested 57-year-old Ikechukwu Uwakwe at Iddo Motor Park, Lagos, with 209.5 kilograms of Scottish Loud cannabis concealed in goods heading to Enugu.
In another interception on the Mile 2 Bridge, Lagos, two Benin Republic nationals, Hossou Tito Julien (30) and Mancellim Dossou (19) and Nigerian Jackson ThankGod were arrested while transporting 558,900 pills of Tramadol 250mg hidden in a fabricated compartment in their truck from Togo.
Similarly, Lucky Abonga and Osas Azamobo were nabbed along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway with 118 kilograms of skunk, while Helen Ese Idiji (40) and Rashidat Sa’adullah (53) were arrested at No. 15 Olumokun Street, Amukoko, Lagos, with 28.8 kilograms of skunk. Idiji reportedly used Sa’adullah’s residence as a storage point for distribution.
Meanwhile, the NDLEA continues its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation campaigns across schools, places of worship, and communities nationwide, reaching institutions in Yobe, Lagos, Kano, Kogi, and Enugu states, among others.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended the officers of the MMIA, Special Operations, Apapa, FCT, Anambra, and Lagos commands for their diligence. He urged sustained efforts in both supply reduction and public sensitisation to curb drug trafficking and abuse.
