The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will officially unveil its Electronic Case Management System (ECMS) on Monday, June 29, 2026, marking a significant step in the regional court’s ongoing digital transformation.
The launch, themed “Advancing Digital Justice: Enhancing Access, Efficiency and Transparency through Electronic Case Management,” will take place at the Court’s headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
The hybrid event is expected to draw heads of ECOWAS institutions, member state representatives, diplomats, legal practitioners, development partners, civil society organisations, academics and journalists.
Designed as a secure, multilingual, web-based platform, the ECMS will digitise the Court’s entire judicial process from case filing to final judgment. Key features include electronic filing, digital document management, real-time case tracking, automated registry workflows, virtual hearings, and controlled access for judges, registry staff, lawyers, litigants and other authorised users.
According to the Court, the system was developed through a comprehensive process involving software development, rigorous testing, data migration, user training and pilot implementation. Once fully operational, it is expected to drastically reduce reliance on paper-based systems, streamline procedures, strengthen data security and improve overall transparency and accountability.
Beyond internal efficiency gains, the ECMS aims to broaden access to justice across the 15 ECOWAS member states by allowing legal practitioners and litigants to engage with the Court electronically, irrespective of their physical location.
The initiative aligns with the Court’s 2026-2030 Strategic Plan and reflects a broader regional and global trend of judicial institutions adopting technology to deliver faster, more transparent and accessible justice in the digital age.
During the launch ceremony, stakeholders will have the opportunity to witness live demonstrations of the platform’s capabilities and engage in discussions on the future of electronic justice services in West Africa. Simultaneous interpretation in English, French and Portuguese will ensure inclusive participation.
