Operatives of the Nigerian Navy’s Oguta Naval Base have arrested two suspects, including a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, for alleged vandalism of an oil pipeline belonging to Addax Petroleum in Imo State.
The suspects, identified as Alfred Kwosa, 57, a retired DSP from Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, and Michael Nnamdi, alias ‘Piloter’, 51, from Nnebuku community, were apprehended on Monday during an intelligence-led operation.
According to the Commander of Naval Base Oguta, Commodore Sabo Tanko Lengaya, the operatives intercepted a Mercedes truck with registration number AGL 378 XV, laden with 10 pieces of vandalised crude oil pipeline suspected to have been stolen from the pipeline system along Osu-Obodo road in Oguta Local Government Area.
“The truck driver, Stanley Uzoma, escaped on sighting the troops, but the escort of the consignment, Alfred Kwosa, was apprehended,” Commodore Lengaya said. He added that Kwosa sustained a gunshot wound while attempting to flee. The second suspect, Nnamdi, was traced and arrested at his residence in the neighbouring Nnebuku community.
The Commander disclosed that the arrested suspects and the recovered vehicle have been taken into custody at the Naval Base for preliminary investigation, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing driver and other members of the syndicate.
Commodore Lengaya described the operation as a significant success in the Nigerian Navy’s continued efforts to combat crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and economic sabotage in the region.
“The operation is consistent with the objectives of the Nigerian Navy in the continued internal security operations aimed at denying criminal elements the freedom of action in the state,” he stated.
The arrests and recovery of the vandalised pipeline materials are expected to yield valuable intelligence for further operations against oil theft networks operating in the area.
