Imo State Police Command has arrested two suspected terrorists and recovered an AK-47 rifle, a hand grenade, live ammunition and other items from a suspected Eastern Security Network camp in Ubah Agwa, Oguta Local Government Area.
The arrests followed investigations into the foiled attack on Agwa Police Division on August 21, in which a suspected terrorist kingpin identified as Chiemela, also known as “Disaster,” was killed. Command spokesperson DSP Henry Okoye said in a statement issued on Thursday that one of the suspects, Jones Okechukwu Anyim, 29, from Umuokijo Mgbala Agwa, was arrested at about 4:20 p.m. on September 15. The arrest followed information and confessions obtained from the second suspect, Happiness Uche, 32, from Ubah Agwa.
Police operatives, working with the Divisional Police Officer of Agwa Police Division, then moved to the suspected hideout. Suspects at the camp opened fire when they sighted the officers but were overpowered and fled. Some of the fleeing suspects are believed to have sustained gunshot injuries. A search of an abandoned, uncompleted bungalow at the location yielded one AK-47 rifle without a visible identification number and two magazines containing 52 rounds of live ammunition.
Officers also recovered four military uniforms, five police uniforms bearing name tags, three Biafra flags, six Biafra-regalia uniforms, three uniforms marked ESN and four ESN-marked berets. Other items found included a hand grenade, ATM cards believed to belong to different people, currencies bearing Biafran inscriptions, foreign currencies, enlarged photographs of an unidentified person, and several objects suspected to be ritual materials.
The command described the location as a suspected terrorist hideout that has now been dislodged and secured. Efforts are continuing to locate and arrest the suspects who escaped. The arrested men will be charged to court after the investigation is completed. The operation forms part of the ongoing police probe into violent crimes in Oguta following the August 21 attack.
