The Anambra State Government is still having monthly deductions made from its Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) revenue to service external loans taken during the administration of former Governor Peter Obi, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, has said.
Mefor made the disclosure on Friday while appearing on Arise Television’s The Morning Show. He said the loans formed part of eight external facilities guaranteed by the Federal Government and that the outstanding obligations should be considered when assessing Obi’s financial record in office.
“First and foremost, a loan is a loan, and whether it is sovereign or not, even an interest-free loan is still a loan. The FAAC allocations to Anambra State are being deducted every month to service the separate loans taken by the Peter Obi administration,” Mefor said.
He put the external facilities attributed to Obi’s tenure at $123 million. According to the state government, records from the Debt Management Office show the outstanding balance stood at about N127.4 billion as of June 30, 2026.
Mefor rejected Obi’s claims that he did not take loans and that he left no financial liabilities for his successor when he handed over in 2014. “The point I’m trying to make is simple: he took loans, and he said he didn’t take,” the commissioner said. He added that the assertion that Obi passed on no loan-related obligations “is also not correct.”
The commissioner noted that states had the option of participating in such federal-guaranteed lending programmes. He cited Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s decision not to join the Nigeria CARES loan from the World Bank as an example of a state choosing not to take on such facilities. “So Obi had the opportunity to either take or not to take. So if you take, you take the responsibility,” Mefor said.
The comments form the latest exchange in an ongoing dispute over Anambra’s finances during Obi’s time in office. Obi has denied leaving the state with outstanding debts, unpaid salaries, pensions, gratuities or contractor obligations. He has challenged the state government to produce evidence to the contrary, saying he would abandon his campaign for the 2027 presidential election if it could establish that he left Anambra in debt.
