Owerri — The Imo State Police Command has arrested seven suspected armed robbers operating around the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) and Ihiagwa community in Owerri West Local Government Area.
The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation after a Federal Polytechnic, Nekede student reported being robbed at gunpoint along the FUTO-Ihiagwa road on July 18, 2026.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye said officers first detained three suspects, Stanley Nwachukwu, Moses Okezie and Gabriel Confidence. The men, who allegedly confessed to membership of the Vikings Confraternity, provided information that led to the arrest of four others: Emeka Oguike, Gideon Kadiri, Nnodim David and Kingsley Okwara.
A search of the suspects’ hideout yielded one cut-to-size English-made single-barrel gun, one locally made revolver pistol, one locally made single-barrel gun and four rounds of live cartridges.
State Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso praised the operatives for their professionalism and reaffirmed the command’s determination to tackle cultism, armed robbery and other violent crimes. He urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to the police.
Investigations are ongoing to track down other suspects still at large.
