Nigerians seeking to study or visit Canada face longer waits after the latest update from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
As of September 16, the estimated processing time for study permits submitted from Nigeria stood at 10 weeks, up from nine weeks the previous week. Visitor visa applications from Nigeria rose to 87 days from 84 days recorded on September 9. Work permit processing times remained steady at 10 weeks.
The figures matter for students who must obtain a study permit before travelling and for others planning temporary stays. IRCC stresses that the published times are estimates only and not guarantees. Actual processing can take longer depending on whether an application is complete, the volume of applications on hand, verification requirements and any extra checks needed.
By comparison, study permit estimates elsewhere held steady: five weeks for applicants in India and the Philippines, six weeks for those in the United States and seven weeks for applicants in Pakistan. Visitor visa estimates were 29 days for India, 75 days for Pakistan, 16 days for the United States and 21 days for the Philippines.
IRCC advises prospective students to apply as soon as they receive a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution. Most also need a provincial or territorial attestation letter where required. The department notes that visitor visa timelines similarly depend on how quickly biometrics and supporting documents are provided and whether further security screening is required.
