A former All Progressives Congress chairman in Imo State has called for an open discussion on leadership continuity after Governor Hope Uzodimma’s tenure, arguing that the party must present a strong case based on the administration’s record.
Macdonal Ebere, the immediate past APC state chairman and current board chairman of the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology in Lagos, made the remarks in an interview on Thursday in Abuja.
He said the Imo APC needed to highlight the measurable results of Uzodimma’s government so voters could see elections as a choice about continuation rather than a simple change of administration.
Ebere recalled that when Uzodimma took office in January 2020 the state was effectively insolvent. Debt exceeded N280 billion, monthly internally generated revenue stood below N400 million, the civil service was demoralised and Government House could not host official functions.
The governor’s “3R” programme of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Recovery was designed to stabilise the state, he said. After six years, the results were clear and should not be interrupted.
More than 150 roads have been completed across the Owerri, Orlu and Okigwe zones, including major corridors such as Owerri-Orlu, Owerri-Okigwe, Owerri-Mbaise-Umuahia, Toronto-Orji, MCC-Toronto-Uratta and Orlu-Nkume-Umuowa. The Maria Assumpta Flyover and urban renewal works in Owerri have cut intra-state travel times from two to three hours to less than 45 minutes.
Monthly IGR has risen from about N400 million to more than N5 billion, while total debt has fallen from over N280 billion to under N90 billion. The state now funds road projects from its own revenue rather than relying on overdrafts to meet salary obligations, Ebere said.
He also pointed to the Orashi Power Plant and the Light-up Imo initiative, which have restored steady public electricity to parts of Owerri and provided a model for wider power distribution and industrial growth.
