The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has extended the deadline for submitting memoranda and position papers to 5 p.m. West Africa Time on Friday, August 21, 2026.
Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu and chairman of the working group, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, announced the extension on Thursday. He said the move would give stakeholders more time to prepare thorough, well-considered contributions to the proposed legislation.
The group stressed its commitment to broad consultation so that informed perspectives from Nigerians and relevant institutions can shape the bill. The legislation is expected to establish the operational, administrative, institutional and funding framework for a more effective policing system that meets Nigeria’s changing security challenges, while also embedding safeguards for accountability, professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights.
“Given the significance of the proposed reform to the future of policing and internal security in Nigeria, the Working Group considers it important that stakeholders are afforded more opportunity to make substantive and technically sound contributions to the process,” the statement said.
Legal practitioners, civil society organisations, security professionals, state governments, professional bodies, academics, experts and members of the public are invited to participate. All submissions must be made exclusively through the official portal, nationalpolicingbill.com, by the new deadline.
The working group noted that key issues requiring careful attention include sustainable funding, command and control structures, recruitment and training standards, operational jurisdiction, inter-agency coordination, accountability mechanisms and protections against political interference or abuse. Robust stakeholder input is essential to produce a framework that is effective, accountable, sustainable and responsive to community security needs across the country.
At the end of its assignment, the group will present a final, implementation-ready draft of the National Policing Bill for legislative processing. It thanked those who have already submitted memoranda and urged others to take advantage of the extended window.
