Nigeria’s sole confirmed Ebola patient, identified as the wife of a Swiss diplomat, is showing signs of recovery, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare said on Friday. Authorities report no evidence of community transmission so far.
In an update posted on its official X account, the ministry said contact tracing, quarantine and monitoring remain underway as officials work to contain the virus. The government is also strengthening national coordination and health facility preparedness.
“The Federal Government has provided an update on the confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria, reporting that the patient is showing signs of recovery. There is currently no evidence of community spread,” the ministry stated. It urged Nigerians to follow recommended precautions, rely on information from recognised health authorities and avoid sharing unverified reports.
The development follows comments by Health and Social Welfare Minister Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, who said there is currently no public health reason to cancel or change planned large gatherings. He added that the government would review its position if the situation changed, guided by scientific evidence and expert advice.
“At this moment, there is no indication that requires us to alter the course of large gatherings that have been planned. But if the situation changes, we’ll make a determination, we’ll consult broadly with the right experts and make that determination,” Pate said.
He cautioned political leaders against politicising the outbreak, describing public health as an issue that should unite Nigerians across political, ethnic and religious lines.
“We certainly will encourage them to not politicise a humanitarian and public health issue. If there’s one issue that will unite Nigerians, it is health. Because health has no political party, has no citizenship, has no nationality, has no tribe, no religion. It is a great unifier,” he said.
Pate warned that allowing political considerations to influence decisions that could prevent avoidable deaths would represent a failure by public health professionals. He also urged journalists to rely on credible expert sources and avoid spreading rumours that could undermine public confidence in the response.
Ebola is a serious infectious disease that spreads through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of a symptomatic infected person, or with contaminated materials.
