Amnesty International Nigeria has vowed to intensify its campaign against politicians accused of using inflammatory language that could spark election violence, spotlighting Senator Francis Fadahunsi as a key case.
Country Director Isa Sanusi said on Thursday that the organisation would seize on the controversy surrounding a viral video of the Osun East senator to demand accountability. In the footage circulating online, Fadahunsi is allegedly heard urging supporters to “kill” members of the Accord Party ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.
Fadahunsi has firmly rejected the claim. He said the video was edited and taken out of context, insisting his reference to “killing” the Accord Party was political metaphor for defeating the party at the ballot box, not a call for physical attacks on its members, supporters or families.
Sanusi condemned the remarks attributed to the senator during a television interview, describing an alleged instruction to “kill them wherever you find them” as unacceptable political rhetoric that advocates hatred. He noted that such speech is prohibited under both Nigerian and international law.
“We are going to use him as an example because this is the first time. We had so many other terrible politicians say terrible things ahead of elections, but this one is exceptional,” Sanusi said. He added that Amnesty would pursue an international “name-and-shame” campaign through its network of branches in 150 countries and alert foreign governments to those it considers promoters of electoral violence.
The senator was summoned by police over the video. He appeared for questioning at the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo on Wednesday and was later released. After the session he again denied any call for physical violence, repeating that his words targeted the party as a political force.
The dispute has fuelled wider concerns about inflammatory campaign language in the final days before the August 15 poll, as parties mobilise supporters. Amnesty argued that stronger accountability is needed to deter a repeat of election-related violence and to set higher standards ahead of the 2027 general elections.
