The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has recovered more than 12.5 million email logs belonging to victims of cyber fraud, with those affected spread across over 50 countries.
Director of the NPF-NCCC, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Akaninyene Ezima, disclosed this on Wednesday during a press conference in Abuja.
According to him, the massive haul came to light in the course of a business email compromise investigation. AIG Ezima revealed that the suspect involved had generated in excess of N100 million from the criminal enterprise.
In a separate international investment fraud and money-laundering probe, the Centre traced more than N3.6 billion in suspected criminal proceeds through a cryptocurrency conversion scheme.
The AIG further noted that investigations into sextortion and romance scams had linked multiple victims to the same criminal identity.
He said the operations highlight the growing technical capacity of the NPF-NCCC in digital forensics, open-source intelligence, network analysis, financial investigation and cryptocurrency tracing. He also stressed the critical role of international cooperation in tackling transnational cybercrime.
“The successful collaboration under the Budapest Convention framework underscores Nigeria’s commitment to international cooperation and information sharing in the fight against cybercrime. The identification of Kestart Technology as a terminal off-ramp for suspected criminal proceeds further demonstrates the Centre’s increasing focus on the financial infrastructure that sustains cybercrime,” AIG Ezima stated.
He explained that the Centre’s mandate goes beyond arresting cybercriminals to identifying, tracing and disrupting the financial channels through which illicit proceeds are moved and hidden.
The arrest of persons involved in the trading of pre-registered SIM cards, he added, shows the NPF-NCCC’s resolve to dismantle the infrastructure that enables identity theft, impersonation and other cyber-enabled offences.
Issuing a stern warning to cybercriminals, the Director declared: “Let me use this opportunity to issue a clear warning to individuals and criminal networks engaged in cybercrime. The long arm of the law will catch up with you. The sophistication of your tools, the use of encrypted platforms, cryptocurrency or false identities will not guarantee your safety.
“The NPF-NCCC is strengthening its investigative capabilities, expanding partnerships with international law enforcement agencies and deploying advanced technical tools to identify, trace, arrest and prosecute persons involved in cybercrime.
“No matter how sophisticated your methods may appear, and no matter how well you believe you have concealed your tracks, we will find you. The operations being presented today are evidence of this commitment.”
