The Student Union Government of the Ogun State College of Nursing, Abeokuta, has formally petitioned the management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, over two separate allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate sexual conduct involving student nurses during their clinical posting at the hospital.
The formal report, dated 25 September 2026, was submitted to the Medical Director through the Head of Clinical Services, the Director of Nursing Services and the Head of the Education Unit. Copies were also sent to the Provost and the Director of the School of Nursing at the Ogun State College of Nursing. The document was signed by the SUG Executive President, Comrade Odedoyin M.A., the Senate President, Senator Muhammed A.S., and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Agemo A.
According to the students’ union, the affected students personally brought the allegations to its attention and provided individual accounts. The incidents were said to have occurred at the Male Medical Ward on 23 and 24 September 2026.
One complaint was made by Okonkwo Goodness Chinecherem. She stated that during night duty on 24 September, while she was sleeping during a break, a male porter identified as Mr Ajayi approached her and touched her without consent. She further alleged that he attempted additional inappropriate sexual contact.
The student reported feeling shocked, frightened and emotionally distressed, and said the experience left her feeling unsafe in the clinical environment. She immediately reported the matter to the Chief Nurse on duty. A subsequent meeting involving the student, the Chief Nurse, the porter and another student reportedly took place the following morning, during which the porter is said to have accepted responsibility and pleaded for forgiveness.
The second complaint came from Aminu Olulabikunmi and related to an incident on 23 September at the same ward. She said she had no access to a designated bed during her break. A male worker, later identified as Mr Ajayi, offered her his bed so she could rest while he slept elsewhere. According to her account, while she was asleep the same worker returned, lay beside her, covered her with a cloth and made an inappropriate advance. She said she immediately stopped the conduct and got out of the bed. She considered the circumstances inappropriate because she had been asleep and therefore in a vulnerable position.
The SUG said it documented and escalated the complaints because of their seriousness and the need to ensure a safe environment for students on clinical training. The union called on FMC Abeokuta management to conduct a formal and impartial investigation. It requested statements from the affected students, relevant staff and any potential witnesses, as well as examination of duty rosters, ward records, security information and other documentation. The union also asked for measures to protect the students from intimidation, retaliation or further inappropriate contact while the matter is investigated.
Beyond the specific complaints, the SUG requested a review of arrangements for students on clinical postings. These included improved provisions for night duty and break periods, stronger supervision, designated safe resting areas, strict enforcement of professional conduct, and separate accommodation arrangements for porters and nurses to maintain appropriate boundaries.
The Elegant Nurses Forum has also called for an independent police investigation into the allegations. In a statement, the forum noted the complaints contained in the SUG report and questioned aspects of how the matters were handled internally. It formally petitioned the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, describing the issues as requiring immediate attention.
Clinical postings form a compulsory part of nursing education in Nigeria. Students rely on healthcare facilities for practical experience under professional supervision. The allegations have raised questions about safety arrangements for student nurses, particularly during night duty and rest periods, and about the handling of complaints involving hospital personnel.
As of the latest available information, the SUG has stressed that its intervention is not intended to prejudge the outcome of any investigation. It has focused on ensuring the complaints are properly documented, investigated and addressed while protecting the safety and dignity of the students involved. Hospital management has not publicly issued a detailed response to the specific allegations in open sources at the time of writing.
The development underscores ongoing concerns about the welfare of student nurses undergoing clinical training in Nigerian healthcare facilities.
