Law officers in Enugu State have commenced a seven-day warning strike, withdrawing their services across government offices and courts over unresolved demands for unpaid allowances and better welfare conditions.
The industrial action, declared by the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Enugu State Chapter, began at midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026. It will run for seven juridical days. The notice announcing the strike was signed by the chapter’s chairman, K.P. Onyia, Esq., and secretary, M.O. Onyeze, Esq.
The association said the decision followed prolonged but unsuccessful efforts to persuade the Enugu State Government to address what it described as the longstanding plight of law officers in the state.
Members resolved to embark on the warning strike after the government failed to resolve the issues.
Among the key demands are the full harmonisation of law officers’ remuneration with that of magistrates, payment of members’ bar practising fees, and payment of annual bar conference fees. The association is also seeking the full restoration and payment of transportation allowance, including outstanding arrears; restoration and payment of hazard allowance with arrears; and restoration and payment of wardrobe allowance, also with arrears.
During the strike period, no law officer in the Abuja or Lagos liaison offices, Government House, or any ministry, department or agency is to report for duty. Members have been directed not to attend court, visit correctional centres, police formations or other law enforcement agencies in the course of official duties. They are instead to work from home and refrain from carrying out government business.
The association expressed hope that the seven-day action would give the authorities the opportunity to address the demands. “We hope that this brief period will enable the authorities to do the needful,” the notice stated.
The warning strike is expected to disrupt the participation of state law officers in court proceedings and other official legal duties while it remains in force.
