Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has declared that Nigeria’s economic recovery hinges entirely on sustaining the reform policies of President Bola Tinubu, warning that any deviation would leave the country trapped in the crisis it faced before the current administration took office.
Speaking on Saturday at a Rainbow Coalition stakeholders’ consultation in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, Wike said the hard economic measures now being implemented were necessary to revive a system that was “virtually dead” when Tinubu assumed power.
“Only the continuation of the economic reforms initiated by the Tinubu government can bring this country back from the economic comatose it was in before this present administration took over,” he said.
Wike dismissed the presidential candidates of rival parties, saying Africa Democratic Congress candidate Abubakar Atiku and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi, had nothing to offer Nigerians. He also said Nigeria Democratic Congress candidate Peter Obi would make no meaningful difference if elected, insisting Tinubu alone had demonstrated genuine commitment to reform.
He urged residents not to hand the country’s progress to “career politicians” and “political opportunists,” whom he compared to “chronic pool betters” who repeatedly gamble with public trust. Supporting such figures, he argued, would divert national resources to recovering campaign costs rather than consolidating economic gains.
Reaffirming that leadership should be judged by past records, Wike challenged his predecessor, Amaechi, to account for major capital allocations in Rivers State during his tenure.
The minister explained that the Rainbow Coalition’s cross-party strategy was designed to secure the legislative cooperation needed to protect the president’s economic agenda. He called on voters in the area to support Tinubu and All Progressives Congress candidates for the Senate and House of Representatives.
“I want total mobilisation on Jan. 16, 2027. Everybody must be mobilised. Make sure we vote and win decisively to protect our collective future,” Wike said.
Council Chairman Dr Chukwu Shedrack praised Wike’s development projects in the local government, including road construction, hospital upgrades and human capital investments.
He pledged that the council would deliver a complete block vote for the APC across all elective positions in 2027, from the presidency to the National Assembly and state House of Assembly.
