Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday unveiled a new Roadster sports car equipped with thrusters that he described as a flying vehicle, during a livestreamed demonstration at a SpaceX test facility in Texas.

The car launched from a steep ramp and landed on its wheels in the demo, which was broadcast on Tesla’s X account. Musk said the vehicle uses ultra high-pressure air tanks to propel itself into the air.
“Flying cars are real,” Musk said at the event. He cautioned that success is not guaranteed but added that “it will probably work.”
Musk framed the project as the result of collaboration between Tesla, which he called the world’s best car company, and SpaceX, the world’s best rocket company. He said the vehicle is scheduled to enter production in 2028.
Technical and regulatory obstacles have long kept the flying-car concept grounded. American aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss introduced the first flying-car prototype in 1917. More recent interest has grown as electric motors and high-performance batteries have improved.
