Nigeria is awaiting delivery of 10 attack helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles and other military hardware to boost its ability to confront security threats, Defence Minister Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd) has said.
Musa made the disclosure on Friday when he received the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, and his team at Ship House in Abuja. The meeting reviewed bilateral defence ties and a proposed €20 million assistance package for the Nigerian Armed Forces under the European Peace Facility.
Mignot invited Musa to a meeting of defence ministers in Brussels later this year. An EU technical team is expected in Abuja in November to finalise details of the support package.
The minister highlighted the shrinking of the Lake Chad Basin, which supports more than 50 million people, as a continuing source of potential instability. He said preventing terrorists from using islands in the lake as strongholds remains a priority for the Multinational Joint Task Force.
Musa thanked the EU for its support and restated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to protecting lives and property. He said relative peace is returning to some parts of the country through the efforts of the armed forces and other security agencies, though kidnapping on major highways and attacks on isolated communities continue.
On the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration programme, Musa insisted that victims of the conflict, including affected military personnel, must be prioritised.
Mignot also praised a recent conference of former and serving Multinational Joint Task Force commanders that included representatives of the African Union and the Lake Chad Basin Commission.
