At least 15 people, including 10 Nigerian soldiers and five members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, were killed on Saturday when insurgents attacked a military convoy in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria.
Troops were travelling along a road between Gamboru Ngala and the Cameroon border when a pickup truck hit a landmine believed to have been planted by Boko Haram. Eight soldiers in the vehicle died instantly. Gunmen then opened fire on a second vehicle, killing two more soldiers and the five Civilian Joint Task Force members who support military operations in the region.
Six wounded soldiers were taken to Maimalari Military Hospital in Maiduguri for treatment, according to two soldiers who described the incident. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to the media. Military spokesperson Captain Mohammed Goni declined to comment.
Borno State remains the centre of an insurgency led by Boko Haram and its breakaway faction, Islamic State West Africa Province. Despite ongoing military operations, both groups continue to target security forces and civilians with roadside bombs and ambushes across northeastern Nigeria and near the country’s borders.
The attack comes days after suspected Boko Haram fighters killed at least 10 soldiers and wounded more than 20 others in a coordinated assault on an army base in the same state.
