The Centre for Advocacy for Credible Leadership has criticised the African Action Congress for designating the area around the Federal High Court and the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja as official campaign venues for October.
In a statement by its Secretary-General, Samuel Kolawole, the group described the AAC’s move as an irresponsible provocation that risks turning sensitive judicial and government institutions into centres of political confrontation. CALC expressed particular concern over the party’s planned mobilisation of supporters to the Federal High Court on Monday, October 19, 2026, saying the action could heighten tensions around the court.
The group stressed that while political parties and citizens have the constitutional right to express grievances and demand justice, those rights must be exercised within the limits of the law. Freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, it said, should not be used to disrupt court proceedings, intimidate public institutions or create conditions for a breakdown of law and order.
CALC linked the planned activity to legal proceedings involving AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore. It argued that the appropriate response to any perceived politically motivated litigation is to pursue lawful remedies through the courts, not to unilaterally convert court premises or a government ministry into campaign grounds.
The organisation warned that any strategy encouraging confrontational mobilisation or hostility around state institutions warrants public scrutiny, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections. It urged the AAC leadership to reconsider the implications of its announcement and ensure its activities do not obstruct access to the courts, interfere with the administration of justice or endanger judges, court staff, lawyers, security personnel and other citizens.
CALC called on the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services and other relevant security agencies to take preventive measures to protect the Federal High Court, the Federal Ministry of Justice and surrounding facilities. It also demanded investigation of any credible threats of violence, intimidation or organised disruption, insisting that those found to have engaged in criminal conduct should face the law regardless of political affiliation.
Any security response, the group added, must remain professional, impartial and proportionate, with full respect for citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and lawful expression. The objective, it said, should be to prevent violence and preserve public order, not to suppress legitimate political opposition.
CALC reiterated that Nigeria’s democratic process must be guided by constitutional procedures, peaceful political competition and credible elections rather than intimidation or attempts to draw public institutions into partisan confrontations.
