The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has described the late Justice Alagoa as a rare breed, known for his humility, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice.
Speaking at a valedictory court session held in his honour on Wednesday in Abuja, Kekere-Ekun praised Alagoa’s courage and dedication, stating that he was a dogged fighter for his beliefs and a man devoid of arrogance and elitism.
She emphasized the importance of leaving behind a meaningful legacy, urging everyone to live in a way that would ensure they are remembered positively.
“His lordship’s passing reminds us all that life is fleeting, and we must strive to leave behind footprints worthy of remembrance. Even in death, Justice Alagoa’s legacy endures a beacon of inspiration, wisdom, and unwavering integrity. His fatherly love, humility, and dedication to justice have left an indelible mark on all who knew him,” she said.
The CJN also highlighted Alagoa’s legal brilliance, noting that his judicial pronouncements were marked by methodical reasoning and profound intellect.
She urged his family to uphold his good name and sustain the values of integrity and service that he embodied throughout his career.
The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, described Justice Alagoa as a firm and courageous jurist, who used the law as an instrument for governance and societal reform.
He acknowledged that while Alagoa’s tenure at the Supreme Court was brief, his judgments and contributions have remained highly impactful, continuing to spark national discourse among legal, political, and social commentators.
The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, called on Nigerians to honour the late jurist by rededicating themselves to the values of justice, integrity, and the rule of law.
Osigwe urged legal professionals to uphold the high standards set by Justice Alagoa, working tirelessly to advance Nigeria’s legal system and overall development.
Born on October 4, 1943, in Ogbolomabiri Nembe, Bayelsa State, Justice Alagoa passed away on December 5, 2024, at the age of 70.
